We had a good rally to Bembridge and
Newport over the Bank Holiday weekend – venturing to Ventnor proved
a bit too daunting in a 5-7 forecast so wisely we altered our plans
and sheltered up the Medina.
More boats than planned turned up at
Bembridge for the Saturday night and we had fun so to speak in trying
to fit everyone in onto the beach.
The final total was 16 boats, which was a good effort.
We had an excellent barbecue, after drinks surrounding
Speedwell and were entertained after dark by Kate & Nicole
performing tricks on a massive piece of driftwood (see photos).
On Sunday the wind got up from the
south west and there were many technical challenges posed in getting
off the beach. The
organiser’s kedge came adrift and he was shoved off the beach by the
valiant efforts of the Vice Commodore & Phil Walden.
Nosey Parker were mown down by their neighbour (a non Seal!)
dragging their anchor – full details have yet to be discovered.
Anyhow we all had lively sails – most of us heading for
Newport. The wind was a
steady 33 knots around the corner from Osborn Bay to Cowes.
6 Boats ended up at Newport and we had an enjoyable meal in the
nearby hostelry.
On Monday two of us scraped off the
mud 4 hours before high water and slid back down the river to catch
the tide home, which only Seals & Parkers can do.
We then had lively sails home –
the organiser’s being dead downwind, which makes a change!
