On Sunday 27 February 2005 a few members of the SSA
visited the Solent Coastguard site at Lee-On-The-Solent. Our host on the
day was coastguard Geoff Mathews. Here are a few pictures of the visit.

Solent Coastguard
The area covered
by Solent Coastguard is that between the dotted lines extending to mid
channel.
Statistics that
show the Solent Coastguard is the busiest although the smallest in
area of any coastguard in the UK.
The sobering loss of life are, in the main, suicides. Though loss
of life from marine accidents is decreasing year on year, suicides are
increasing.
Following a
briefing in the conference room visitors were taken to the incident
room
This shows the
mail terminal in the main ops room used for coordinating rescues.
Here is the
coastguard who is monitoring channel 16 for emergencies (and answering
requests for radio checks!!)
This coastguard
was reading out the weather forecast at this time
The briefing continues.

A final thought -
you are encouraged to register details of your boat with the
coastguard to aid recognition in any emergency.
